Crystal Hindhaugh Ness joined the University in 2013 as a fundraiser, having previously worked for Macmillan Cancer Support. Last year Crystal’s role changed to focus primarily on gifts in will and donations made in memory of a loved one. As the University’s Legacy Officer, Crystal works with alumni and friends of the University who may not necessarily be in a position to donate now, but who would like to leave a gift in their will. She also works with families and friends who wish to name something on campus in honour of a loved one, this ranges from bursary funds directly supporting students, to rooms, buildings and land.
“It is my mission to ensure that when someone wishes to support the University in this way, that I not only work with them to provide the practical details such as wording for their wills and the University’s charitable status, but also explain how their gift can have the maximum impact at the point at which it is received. Leaving a gift in a Will or making a donation in someone’s name is a very personal thing, and I always endeavour to match the donor’s passion and motivations with a real need within the University so that their gift has the greatest effect. I also very much enjoy getting to know our future donors, and understanding the reasons behind their decision to give– it helps me to ensure their wishes are carried out here in a sensitive and meaningful manner. The main thing however that talking to our legators allows me to do, is to say thank you. There is nothing worse than finding out that we had received some money from someone we did not know had written us into their will, and therefore never had a chance to say thank you.”
The University will be setting up its first group to recognise and thank legacy givers, which all legators will be invited to join. Through this society, those who have pledged to include the University in their will, will be invited to attend an annual event as our way of saying thank you.
