World-class concert hall opens

A £9.5m investment in Middleton Hall represents the University’s commitment to creativity – and one of the ways we aim to deliver an unforgettable experience for students, staff and visitors during the City of Culture year and beyond.

WIRED FOR SOUND

Our music studios and recording equipment rival the best commercial studios and include a 48-channel mixing desk.

BBC Introducing aired a show from the studios, providing an opportunity for music staff and students to showcase their talents. A number of BBC Radio 4 shows have already been broadcast from the hall including ‘The 3rd Degree’, ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’
and ‘The Listening Project’.

CINEMATIC

Thanks to its surround-sound cinema, Middleton has already hosted two film festivals. A retrospective paid tribute to alumnus and former lecturer, the Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella. Middleton Movie Mondays shows regular classic and cult film screenings.

World’s greatest artists come to Hull

Minister of State for Digital and Culture, the Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP, visits campus to see British Museum Partnership Tour

20,000 people visited campus, including the Minister of State for Digital and Culture, the Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP, to see a British Museum Partnership Tour, ‘Lines of Thought: Drawing from Michelangelo to Now’. It featured works from some of the all-time greatest artists from Dürer to Degas.

Nina Hanney, a final year History of Art student, who worked as a gallery assistant, says: “The experience has been pivotal for me. I feel so much more confident in just these few short weeks.”

The hall also hosts a programme of talks kicking off with the BP Cultural Visions lectures. A collaboration with BP for Hull UK City of Culture, the talks bring prominent speakers from a variety of backgrounds discussing their work to inspire audiences. Future speakers include former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion and acclaimed artist Richard Twose.

WORLD CLASS

The centrepiece of the multi-million pound redevelopment is a world-class 400-seater concert hall. Its advanced and adaptable acoustics were tested to full effect with an exclusive concert from Opera North to officially re-open Middleton Hall.
